Why does it take so long for windows to shut down, and standby vs hibernation reviewed.
Jonathan wrote in to me with the following issue, which I myself have experienced numerous times. I'll explain whats going on and how to remedy the situation.
Jonathan writes:
"I use Windows XP 2002. Up until recently, my computer wouldn't seem to respond when I tried to shut down or restart, and sometimes when I tried to log off. It generally worked well and then when I would click shut down or restart, nothing happened, or if it did eventually shut down, it would take 30 or 45 minutes or so. Often, I ended up needing to hold down the power button to shut it down. After shutting it down that way, I would always run chkdsk /r, but because this happened like every day, it would be like 2 or 3 hours out of every day spent running chkdsk /r to make sure that everything was still ok despite shutting it down that way.
Since I've stopped using Standby (which I think is the same as hibernation, but I could be wrong) and instead just Log Off when I'm away from the computer, this problem has disappeared, but I still haven't determined why it was happening. It also works a lot better when I Log Off first and then shut down. I'm not sure if it had to with putting it in Standby or Logging out first, but either way, I don't understand why it was making a difference. Any idea? Thank you." Read more »

How to remove viruses, spyware and other malware
There are a number of things that can happen when your computer is infected with a virus, spyware or malware. At their worst, they can record your keystrokes, track personal information and turn your computer against you (sounds far fetched, but skynet may be emerging) and it makes identity theft way too easy for the bad guys.

Using an old Linksys WPC54G wireless card on ubuntu
So Today I just learned how to use an old linksys wifi card on my older Dell laptop (no built-in wifi) on Ubuntu. When I first plugged the wifi card in, it installed the drivers automatically, although it warned that they were proprietary drivers. Next it would scan for networks, and it would find mine, but for some reason just wouldn't connect. To fix this requires you to install ndiswrapper, which allows you to use windows drivers as if they are native to the system. Thanks to the awesome ubuntu community, a forum poster has a solution. Heres how: Read more »
